How to prep your skin for makeup

Makeup looks best on skin that is clean, hydrated and comfortable. A few minutes of prep makes foundation smoother, reduces flaking and helps everything last longer.

1. Cleanse gently

Start with a gentle cleanser to remove oil and residue without leaving skin tight.

2. Hydrate in thin layers

Pat in a hydrating toner or swipe a toner pad, then press in a lightweight serum. Thin layers absorb quickly and leave no slip under makeup.

3. Moisturize

A gel cream adds comfort without heaviness. Dry patches are what make makeup cling and flake, so do not skip this step even if your skin is oily.

4. Sunscreen, then wait

Sunscreen is the last skincare step of the morning. Give it a few minutes to set before makeup so your base does not slide.

5. Apply makeup in thin layers

Build coverage only where you need it. Lighter layers move with your skin and look fresher by the afternoon.

Quick fixes

  • Flaky spots: a little extra cream on those areas only.
  • Shiny by midday: lighter cream, and blot rather than adding powder repeatedly.
  • Lips: a lip sleeping mask overnight makes lipstick go on smoother.

Questions people ask

What should I put on my face before makeup?

Cleanser, a hydrating toner, a lightweight serum, moisturizer and sunscreen, applied thinnest to thickest.

How long should I wait after sunscreen before makeup?

A few minutes, until it no longer feels wet, so makeup does not slide.

Why does my makeup look cakey?

Usually because skin is dehydrated or layers are too thick. Hydrate first and build makeup in thin layers.
